Carroll Mantels of Distinction

Unpacking and installing your mantel from Carroll's.

There are many ways of mounting your new mantel.  The exact way is up to you.  We include the following for your information and do not recommend one way over another.

Carefully remove the screws from the shipping box and save them to use in attaching the legs.

Unpack the mantel from the box and inspect the mantel for damage that may have occurred during shipment. If you find any damage, immediately report the damage to the delivery person and to Carroll Mantels. 334-735-3217

Place a smooth material on the floor to prevent scratches to the mantel.  Place the mantel top on the floor with the top of the shelf on the floor.  Position the legs of the mantel and attach with the screws that were used for the lid of the crate.

Once you have assembled the mantel, place it in position around the fireplace opening using a tape measure to center the mantel with the fireplace opening.  Draw the outline of the mantel on the wall so it may be repositioned later.  Be sure to also mark the base of the leg on the hearth.

After marking the position of the mantel on the wall, use a small amount of construction adhesive (Liquid Nails) to glue the bottom of the leg to the hearth.  Then drive three inch finish nails down at an angle through the back edge of the top of the shelf to toenail the mantel to the studs behind the sheetrock.  Be sure you hit the studs.  With an average mantel it only takes a few nails to attach securely.

You should note that there will be a gap between the fireplace facing material (brick, tile, marble or slate) and the mantel legs. The mantel's inside molding is used to cover the gap between the mantel and the facing material. Put the molding into position and nail the molding to the mantel leg using small finish nails.  Make sure you keep pressure on the leg when nailing to keep the leg from coming loose from the wall.

(If the above does not secure your mantel tightly to the wall, it may be necessary to nail through the breast board into the wall making sure to nail into a stud or other strong structure.)
